Sovereign Housing Project: Spirit of The Land

Picture
In 2012, FGEI collaborated with indigenous group Ancestral Pride of the Ahousaht First Nation to help them secure funding for a sovereign housing project.

From the project description:

The goals for the project include:
  • To be on our own traditional land out on the territory, respectfully utilizing accessing our resources within Ahousaht Ha Houlthlee. The importance and empowering, the act of being upon the land.
  • To be together with families and youth for retreats, hunting, gathering, and fishing.
  • To live sustainably off-grid.
  • To grow food and not to be reliant upon modern food system.
  • To be out upon the territory as Ahousaht that encompasses all of our traditional land.
  • Utilize naturally available materials, both traditional and new. Be open to the concept of alternative housing i.e. cob-housing, straw-bale construction, or rammed earth. Build creating housing that has little to no impact upon the environment.
  • To gather our Ahousaht people and supporters to participate or contribute to the project. To teach and learn from one another and inspire so as to create momentum for others to make similar change. To gather together on the land to share knowledge, with the spirit of respect, empowerment, pride and positivity.
